When this story appeared, the paper received mostly positive responses, including one from a man who played baseball with Bill Lancaster and claimed to be the inspiration for the character of Ogilvie. I also got a nice one from the woman whose son portrayed Ahmad. However, the feedback column the next week printed mostly negative responses. A couple dwelled on the fact that Bill Lancaster had polio.. Of course, I knew this fact, but didn't feel it necessary to include in what was a light-hearted, irony-filled story. One of the feedback letters called me an idiot, which somehow delights me to this day.
